Dragon's Lair by Tell-Me-Lies Dragon's Lair by Tell-Me-Lies
I'm so sick of this. I've been picking at it for weeks now and I've done with it. I'm going to stop liking it completely if I don't let it alone.

This was also one of those deals where I consistently forgot what layer I was working on, know what I mean? I made no end of trouble for myself. There are art issues as well - is Daphne floating? Is she falling, did he catch her? Does she simply weigh less than zero pounds? And what ARE they looking at, anyway?

Having got all that out of my system, Dragon's Lair is my latest obsession. It's insanely fun (also insanely difficult) and is pretty much the best arcade game of all time. I mean, full 2D Don Bluth animation that you can control? Awesomesauce. Also, Dirk and Daphne are an awesome couple. He's just so adorably dorky, but she totally goes for him anyway, even being the hottie that she is. Honestly, I think we need a few more ridiculously hawt princesses - there are plenty of tomboy ones lately.

I'm never going to beat 'Timewarp' though.

OMGWTFBACKGROUND....BQ. Don't worry. I promise this will not become a habit.

Saying how much I like Dragon's Lair depends on how I look at it.  As an animated short film, it is pretty good.  The silent film style of action combined with some bizarre obstacles makes it pretty good.  I know Daphne is both a generic damsel in distress and oversexed, but the animator is Don Bluth. Since he made The Secret of NIMH with the fantastic character named Mrs. Brisby, I can look past the obvious sexism.  I can overlook the cliche part because Bluth used so many strange areas, he earned the right to use a cliche like "save the princess".  I will not give him a total pass though.  There are reused and obvious beeps whenever the right move is made.… This brings me to my main problem with Dragon's Lair.

As a video game, it is nothing more than a parlor trick.  This is a classic example of game developers trying to skip years of technological advancement and get right to the goal of their craft.  In this case, gameplay was sacrificed this game look as good as possible.  The interactivity of this game is extremely limited, with the game being one long quicktime event.  With Dragon's Lair in particular, you have a hard time knowing what buttons to push when.  This makes the whole game Trial and Error based which is not fun.  The fact that you can play this game with a DVD remote speaks volumes about how badly this game has aged.  In fact, it is a crime that Watch Mojo did not put this on their list of Top Ten Games that Aged Poorly.

So, I would not recommend this as a game, but it has its charms.  If you click on that link however, you will get a perfect run of Dragon's Lair, which makes for a far better experience.

okay i love this, but since i saw bri-chan's depiction of it first, i can't help but see them as reg and alice;
you have to admit, if dirk's nose was bigger and he had a few freckles, the resemblance would be uncanny

Ah, Don Bluth and his obsessions with crazy big hair and glitter. But it's so fun to look at xD I love this game, though I haven't had the chance to get very far.

Very nicely done here. All of my pictures contain poses/body language that make no sense at all. What you've done here looks like something right out of the game since Daphne always appeared perpetually weightless. It would be no surprise if she were falling or what have you. So, by all means, don't dislike it. xD It's wonderful.

Your work is amazing + I love Dragon's Lair...gotta tell that the version for the commodore64 is totally crazy, and way too hard :XD:!
Anyway my point is: good job*_*!

I love how this just flows in some way. The lineart is amazing. How in the world do you do that?

And look at those big flashy Daphne eyes ¤.¤

Is it weird that I"m reminded of Lancelot and Prince Herbert from Spamalot? I think it's due to Dirk more than anything.

before i read your explination (saying there was no explanation to why thery are standing like this and what they're looking at) i was thinking they just have fallen from top, Dirk had just catched himself on one foot - trying to get his balance with his other leg - and grabbed our falling Daphne. And, finally, they're both looking at the next danger to face ^^
awesome pic, i love it  i really must by the DL DVD !!

I heard Warner Bros. are gonna help Bluth to make a full animated feature of Dragon Lair: The Movie :excited:! No one knows when yet.

I am Red Swan Isabelle the gunner in battle and Metalbender of the Bird of Hermes!

I read about that too. Whenever it comes out, I'll definitely be first in line to see it. Squee!

Hooray for Don Bluth love!
You really captured the bounciness of his style while incorporating your own!
Great job on the dynamics and movement in her outfit! Awesome as usual!

I adore this! Don Bluth is truly one of the greatest animators out there. I love couples like this. They are so uncanny you gotta love them anyway!

Don Bluth is probably one of my favorite animators . . . besides Chuck Jones. They're art is just so warm and appealing to me  Nice job by the way but I can see your point about her looking floaty, she doesn't seem to show enough of the gravitational pull :)

Yay! I remember playing Dragon's Lair years ago on this big arcade machine. I learned two things that day: the game cannot produce the "press this button" flash on-screen and accept a joystick command at the same time, and bats can eat your head in one bite.

I'm buzzing on how awesome this pic is. We need more bikini princesses!

And when Dirk saves the day, we can all celebrate with juice made with his helmet. o_o

Oh, dear gods, I love this game. It is insanely difficult, though. It seems like I can never get past the first few levels. :dohtwo:

Splendid picture! I love just about anything that Don Bluth dishes out for us media consumers. Dirk and Daphne are so adorable, too. I managed to see what happens in the end after he finally rescues her, and I just love the interaction. X3 Don't know if you've beaten it yet, so I won't spoil the ending. ;P Your background actually looks very nice, especially compared to anything I could ever come up with. And besides, I love all of the colours. :)
Tell-Me-Lies Featured By Owner Jul 8, 2008
Actually, the dvds have a 'watch' option for losers like me... so yeah, I've seen the endings to both Dragon's Lair games, and I have beaten the first one. The payoffs on these games (especially Timewarp, srsly) are incredibly good - especially compared to most arcade games that just say "CONGRATULATIONS - YOU ARE WINNER!"
